A letter dated 1947 from Albert L. Shier which describes the Shier history all the way back to 57 B.C. Julius Caesar. The first place the Shier famiy is "Palatine" on the headwaters of the Rhine just below Bavaria. [attached letter]

Shier has been also spelled Scheuer, Sheuer, Schyer, and Shire.
The 1st generation: Johann Adam SCHEUER [c1674-1758] was the original German emigrant to settle in Ireland. He was enrolled as John Adam SHEUER aged 35, husbandman, and vinedresser, and sons aged 8 and 5 years and a daughter aged 2 years. This family was in the first party of Palatine refugees to reach London in 1709. [see attached] |
May to November 1709 estimated 2,000 to 32,000 emigrants landed in England. Many in Ireland from the land known as the Palatine; Rhenish or Lower Palatinate Country. They had survived a long war of 30 years and were truly remarkable people due to the fertility of the land and soil. They had survived stamping of Louis XIV's armies. Marshal Turenue thoroughly devastated the providence in 1674. [attached 4 page document]
